Entry Requirements

Bachelor of Music or equivalent

IELTS: Overall band score of 6.5 and Band score of 6 in all bands; TOEFL Paper-based: total score of 577 with a minimum of 4.5 in the Test of Written English (TWE) or Internet-based: total score of 79 with a minimum of 21 in Writing, 18 in Speaking and 13 in Reading and Listening; Pearson Test of English (Academic) overall score of 58 and Skills profile of no less than 50 in all skills; and Cambridge English-Advanced (CAE): Overall score of 176 and Individual score of 169 in all skills.

This intensive degree combines performance studies in your specialisation with the theory, method and practice of teaching.

What will you do?

Our Master of Music (Performance and Pedagogy) will advance your technical mastery as you:

build pedagogical skills and knowledge through seminars and workshops
undertake a significant research project on learning and teaching processes
gain hands-on experience through teaching practise in selected schools and colleges
perform minor and major recitals with pedagogy related content
benefit from weekly one-to-one lessons with performance staff.

Where could it take you?

You’ll graduate well prepared to pursue dual careers in music performance and education. You could play in an orchestra while running a private music studio. You might be a soloist who coaches students through masterclasses and workshops. Perhaps you’ll play chamber music as well as teaching on school and college campuses.

Career Readiness

Graduates commence dual careers as performers in one or more specialist branches, such as solo performance, chamber music or orchestral playing and secondly as teachers able to function successfully in a wide variety of settings and circumstances. Subject to local registration or accreditation requirements, graduates may consider primary, secondary and tertiary level piano teaching in the private studio, the school and college campus, as well as various teaching modes, such as individual or small-group.

Degree Structure

The program provides 12 units of performance courses and 12 units of pedagogy courses each year. Two minor recitals, with pedagogy related themes, are undertaken in Year 1, and a major recital is undertaken in Year 2. Individual tuition is provided each year. Pedagogy courses are taught in seminars and workshops with off-campus teaching practice in selected schools and colleges.
