Course Details

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course at Ironwood Institute prepares students for further study in an academic setting while also improving their underlying proficiency in English. After completing the English for Academic Purposes course, students may seek to continue their study in foundation studies programs, universities or other tertiary education institutions. The course integrates the four macro skills of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing as well as Grammar, Vocabulary, and Academic Skills. The course incorporates themes relevant to a variety of higher education courses so that students are exposed to materials and tasks like those they will find in English-medium higher education institutions. The classes seek to give students an understanding of academic culture in English speaking institutions. The course also recognizes that students may have a range of learning styles which need to be catered for using a variety of teaching methods. During the course, students are required to complete assignments and situations that are like those that they will encounter in higher education. The course caters for different learning styles and takes place in a cross-cultural environment which encourages students to draw on their experiences and express their individuality. Entry Requirements: All students are required to undertake a Placement Test prior commencement to establish their level of entry for either Foundation or Advanced. All students must be 18 years of age at the time of commencement. English Requirements Students will already have English language skills commensurate with B2 General English.
